Premier Pitches

Construction of SISGrass stitched hybrid turf training pitches

Nottingham Forest Football Club, Training Ground

Introduction

New first team training pitches

Following promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in May 2022, Nottingham Forest decided to invest in two new hybrid training pitches for their first team.

MJ Abbott secured the work through competitive tender, starting the project in June 2022.

The tender process and construction monitoring was carried out by PSD.

Project challenges

Ground conditions

The existing ground conditions proved to be incredibly hard, which meant it was a challenge to complete the cut and fill bulk earthworks to programme.

Our approach

Pitch construction

The scope of work comprised the following:

  • Carry out bulk earthworks to improve plateau levels
  • Installation of new primary drainage and irrigation systems
  • Supply and install new gravel raft drainage layer, lower sand layer and upper rootzone surface complete with nutrient retentive amendments
  • Cultivation, fertiliser applications and seeding carried out in conjunction with Premier Pitches
  • Installation of SISGrass stitched hybrid pitch reinforcement system.

Outcomes

Exceeded expectations

The pitch plateau was successfully grown in by Ewan Hunter, Jack Farmer and their team, who continued to maintain a high standard during the first season’s use.

The pitch played as expected during its first season, reacting well to intensive use at times, across all club competition training sessions. The response from club staff was positive. The team maintained Premier League status for the 2023-24 season.

The pitches were successfully fully renovated by Premier Pitches in summer 2023 following the first season’s use.
